Born and raised in a proud union family in Detroit, China is driven by her commitment to the people and neighborhoods of our community.
China earned her Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from Langston University, an HBCU in Oklahoma, and Master of Arts in Social Justice from Marygrove College in Detroit. Currently, China is pursuing her Ph.D. in Urban Education at Eastern Michigan University.
China has years of experience working in local government and the non-profit sector, including organizing healthcare workers with SEIU, leading Community Relations for Detroit City Council, and serving as Managing Editor for local youth journalism program, “Our Life in the D.”
China has raised over $2 million in grant awards from various foundations, including The Kresge Foundation, Knight Foundation, The Skillman Foundation, and The McGregor Fund. She’s also helped secure funds in her own neighborhood for the University Commonwealth, Jazz on the Ave, and Light Up Livernois.
Active in the community, China volunteers with several local organizations, including Planned Parenthood, Mothering Justice, and the Detroit Branch NAACP. She also served on the Women’s Committee of The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
Recognized as an emerging leader by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and the National Women’s Political Caucus, China is a sought-after trainer, speaker, writer, and thought-leader on issues of race, gender, and social justice.
China resides in Detroit’s University District neighborhood and mentors and tutors young people during her free time.
